COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) — According to the SC Children’s Hospital Collaborative, three children will be on a ventilator with COVID-19 at hospitals in South Carolina as of Friday.
A total of 35 children have been hospitalized with COVID in the state and eight are in critical care.
“These numbers are quite significant,” said MUSC pediatrician Dr. Elizabeth Mack. “[It’s] It’s important to remember that this is on top of the usual childhood illnesses and injuries we see, from pneumonia to cancer to trauma.”
dr. Mack also said she is seeing an increase in viruses that typically spread in the winter and have already filled children’s hospitals across the country.
Her message to the public, given that three children are on a ventilator, is blunt: “one sick child is too many.”
