Shannen Doherty does not shy away from the reality of stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Instead, she confronts the way her body has changed, continues to change, and what her relationship to her body is. In a 2019 interview with Health, Doherty said, “The hormones I was taking immediately threw my body into menopause.”
Doherty cannot get out of menopause because it requires estrogen. Using estrogen can increase or worsen her cancer chances. Still, Doherty told Health (and has been open about it over the years) that she’s always wanted to have a child. She and her husband talked about adoption and egg donors. However, Doherty cannot surround her mind with the fear that she may only have five or ten years to live.
“I certainly wouldn’t want my 10-year-old burying a mother. I’ve always wanted a child. But maybe I should be a mother in a different way,” she said.
