HOUSTON – September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and from paying mortgages to providing laptops, there’s one organization that ensures no family will fight alone.

“Heroes for Children started over 15 years ago. It was founded by two mothers who endured the fight against childhood cancer, [and] unfortunately lost their daughters to it. They had all the support, the people did all the things […] but other people don’t, so [they] decided this had to change,” said Julie Malin, director of Heroes for Children in South Texas.
This month, Heroes for Children surprises 20 Texas families by paying off their mortgages in full.
If your family needs financial or social assistance, Malin suggests contacting your social worker.
“If you get cancer, you are assigned a social worker in the hospital. Those are our front lines. That’s the one who fills out the applications… we get them weekly from them. They get the stories, they understand what is going on with the families and what our help can best offer.”
Heroes for Children will have a luncheon on Thursday, October 7 to raise money to continue serving families.
