Pediatric COVID hospitalizations on the rise in Alabama

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The number of children in Alabama hospitals battling COVID-19 is reaching record numbers.

According to Danne Howard of the Alabama Hospital Association, there are currently 56 children in the hospital battling COVID. She said they are closely monitoring the pediatric numbers, which continue to rise day after day.

Alabama schools reported more than 9,000 cases of COVID-19 this week

Howard fears that after this weekend and with more kids going to school, the state could see another spike in hospitalizations for children with COVID, and with children under 12 ineligible for the vaccine, self-vaccinating is the only way to help.

“Do it for the kids,” Howard said. “They are the most vulnerable right now because they cannot be vaccinated, nor can they shelter from adults who have not been vaccinated.”

Howard encourages everyone to think about their own behavior and gather factual information, as this is currently the only way to prevent children from getting COVID and going to the hospital.
