Golf tournament planned in Waterloo to raise funds to help fight childhood cancer

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – On Monday, June 28, Northwestern Mutual-Eastern Iowa will be hosting a golf fundraiser in Waterloo to help in the fight against childhood cancer.

Specifically, the Lemonball Scramble will raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand and the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Northwestern Mutual-Eastern Iowa staff and sponsors will join together at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo, all in an effort to make a difference as the childhood cancer fight continues.

“At Northwestern Mutual, we firmly believe in the power of transforming the communities around us and actively improving the lives of others,” said Kalvin Grabau Keele, Managing Partner of Northwestern Mutual-Eastern Iowa.

Special guest at the fundraiser will be Nolan Ford. Nolan’s sister, Mackenzie, lost her battle with cancer at nine-years-old. 12 years later, Nolan is in medical school and plans to be a pediatric oncologist. He received a POST grant from Alex’s Lemonade Stand to work in the laboratory with his sister’s oncologist.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand was founded by Alexandra “Alex” Scott. While battling cancer, Alex and her family held yearly lemonade stands in their front yard to benefit childhood cancer research.  Alex died in 2004 at 8-years-old and had raised more than $1 million at that time to help find a cure. The efforts continue in Alex’s memory.
