CHICAGO, May 13, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Camp Kids Are Kids Chicago #CKAKC is a place where kids 7-17 years old who are touched by cancer can just be kids. Typically camp takes place in downtown Chicago at the Palmer House Hilton for patients and the Drake for siblings. Suites are transformed into sleeping cabins and conference rooms become dining and activity spaces – all within easy reach of the world’s best medical facilities.
Virtual camp for children fighting cancer
Due to COVID, all personal programming will take place this year on Saturday 22 May, virtually via Zoom for campers. A silver lining to the “COVID Cloud” is that #CKACK is able to serve children who would not have attended because of the treatment.
The unique virtual camp includes camp activities such as art, music, hut time, camp fires and a talent show. All campers will receive a campers package of supplies needed to participate and treats to bring the camp experience into their home or hospital.
“Fostering a spirit of joy in a fun environment that builds self-esteem, independence and friendships for children living with cancer and their siblings is our goal,” said Richard G. Weinberg, president of Camp Kids. “As we get around the pandemic, our virtual camp will enable children undergoing treatment to be children again by bringing the outdoors to them.”
In addition to the summer camp program, families with children affected by a cancer diagnosis have participated in Camp Kids weekend programs this winter and spring to give them more opportunity to connect with others who share the same experience in a fun environment.
All campers join for free. #CKAKC is funded by the generous contributions of individuals, companies and organizations. Camp Kids was founded in 2013 by a team of Chicago community leaders and pediatric oncology camping professionals who envisioned the creation of a city camp for children with cancer. The organization’s inaugural camp was a huge success, and each year Camp Kids expands to provide more opportunities for more families in Illinois.
